SFS Matmen 3rd Straight SJS Victim

An undermanned and inexperienced San Francisco State wrestling team was no match for Coach Hugh Mumby's Spartan wrestlers as SJS piled up a 33-3 victory Friday night in the Spartan Gym.

The lone San Jose loss was in the 137-pound class where Gator Phil Lyons won a 4-0 decision from Danny Gonsalves.

Outstanding bout of the evening was between Spartan Ray Thomas and Ray Nelson of SFS. With the points at eight all in the final round, Thomas pinned his opponent with about a minute left in the match.

Other San Jose winners were Pete Herder, winner by pin over Bob Watt in the 147-pound class, Dave Leslie, who pinned Rich Fiore in the first round of their 157-pound class, and Bob Roebuck, another first round winner over Phil Roark.

Kay Toyota and Joe Ross, Spartan 123 and 130-pound representatives respectively, won their matches by forfeit.

Friday night's victory was the third straight dual meet success for Coach Mumby's grapplers. They have also defeated Cal and Stanford.
