Spartans Win Over Stanford 23-13

by Bill Farr

Coach Hugh Mumby's Spartan wrestlers extended their winning streak to four straight last night when they defeated the Stanford mat team 23-13 in the Spartan Gym.

The Mumbymen now have won dual meets from the University of California and Stanford and emerged as the top team in both the Novice and Junior PAAU tournaments.

Dick Francis' pin win over Stanford's Pat Madden in the 177-pound bout cinched victory for the Spartans. Going into the bout, which was the evening's finale, SJS had an 18-13 margin.

The only advantage San Jose had before Francis' victory was the forfeiture by Stanford in the heavyweight match.

In the opening bout Spartan Kay Toyota pinned Steve Gee in 2:18 to win the 123-pound bout.

Oliver Holmes maintained control of Joe Ross throughout their 130-pound battle and the Stanford matman was awarded the decision on point, 4-1.

Stanford's George Russell pinned Dan Gonsalves in 1:36 in the 137-pound division. The team score was 10-8 in favor of the Spartans (including the forfeit).

Pete Herder, Spartan 147-pounder, scored a pin over Bruce Bailey in 4:28 and SJS had a 15-8 advantage. Dave Leslie's victory over Ken James in a well-wrestled 157-pound match made it 18-8.

Indian Bob Beatie pinned Ray Thomas 8:12 of their 167-pound bout to bring the team score to 18-13 and a tie score possible.
