  SJS Grapplers Win Triangular Meet

Winning the triangular and both dual meets, the Spartan wrestlers defeated Stanford and Oregon College of Education at the Stanford gym Saturday.

San Jose State defeated Stanford 19-11 and OCE 17-11 in the dual meet scores. In the triangular scoring, SJS had 36, OCE 30, and Stanford 22.

Three Spartans, Loren Miller, Carl Dommeyer, and Ted Kaphengst remained undefeated.

In the 123-pound division, Roy Kusumoto defeated his Stanford opponent, but lost to OCE.

Ted Kaphengst won in his division by pinning both his opponents.

Art Beatty defeated his Stanford opponent in the 137-pound division, but lost to OCE.

Loren Miller, who won the 147-pound division, was the only Spartan participant who pinned both his opponents.

Carl Dommeyer won the 157-pound division by decisioning both his opponents.

Gary Barnett defeated his OCE opponent in the 177-pound division, but lost to Stanford.

Dan Barclay was pinned by his Stanford opponent in the heavyweight division, but defeated his OCE opponent.

The grapplers, according to coach Hugh Mumby, will continue training throughout the semester break. Immediately after finals, the Spartans will have five consecutive days of practice. Then they travel to Southern California to face San Diego State on Feb. 2, UCLA Feb. 3, and UC Santa Barbara Feb. 4.

Despite three consecutive meets, coach Mumby said the activity would be less strenuous than three consecutive practice sessions.

Mumby, who thinks his team is improving every week and is exceedingly strong in the middle weights, said three of the currently undefeated Spartans should remain undefeated when the semester break meets have concluded.
