Spartan wrestlers boosted their almost perfect record to 5-1 last weekend in a pair of highly successful wins.
Individual meets with Stanford and Long Beach State, the Spartans lost only three individual matches winning 25-6
and 32-3, respectively.
Gary Lorenz highlighted the two matches, winning both his contests to maintain his undefeated string in dual matches.
Against Stanford Friday L.Q. Starling (123), Dick Hamm (130), Dan Swenson (137), Lorenz (145), Gary Ramstetter
(160), Paul Hatling (177), and heavyweight Rich Popejoy were victorious. Swenson and Popejoy's wins came on pins.
Saturday in Long Beach conflict, Starling, Hamm, Swenson, Lorenz, Hatling, and Popejoy repeated their triumphs
while Dave Allen (152) and Mike Herschfelt (167) joined the winner's circle.
Ramstetter was decisioned, 8-1, Saturday, for his first loss in dual competition.
Lorenz, who is establishing himself as one of the better college wrestlers in the Bay Area, gained more recognition
in the recent Navy Intercollegiate tournament at Hunters Point.
After winning the 154-pound crown on five pin victories and one decision, the Spartan junior was name the meet's
outstanding wrestler.
Starling gained a 2nd at 114.5 and Ramstetter a third at 191 as the Spartans finished third in the tourney.
SJS' next activity, after a break for finals, comes at the eight-team Arizona State University tournament Jan.
