SJS's wrestling forces made their home seasonal dual meet debut a highly successful one by scoring two convincing
victories over the weekend, their first wins of the 1969-70 campaign defeating Sacramento State 44-0 and San Diego
State 24-14.
The Spartan matmen will be inactive until Jan. 24 when they resume action in dual meets against Cal State-LA and
UC Santa Barbara.
The defending PCAA champion Spartans registered their initial conference win Saturday over San Diego through claiming
only five of ten events.
SJS victories included Dave Smith (134), John Jacobo (142), Walt Thatcher (167), Paul Hatling (177), and Cleve
Holt (hwt). The Spartans also got an important five point forfeiture in the 150-pound class.
Three of the SJS wins came by way of pins with Jacobo, Tim Kerr, and Holt garnering five points each.
SJS had little trouble in toying with Sacramento State Friday. Sacramento gave up an initial 10 points because
of forfeitures, but the Spartans made life miserable for the visitors who did make an appearance on the mats by
scoring five pins and three shutouts.
Yee, Smith, Jacobo, Terry Kerr, and Hatling all scored pins for SJS while Tim Owens (126), Arno Dominguez (158),
and Tim Kerr registered 3-0 blankings.
Bill Smith's grapplers now stand at 2-1 in dual meet activity, having finished fifth in two pre-season tournaments,
the SJS Invitational and the Chico State tourney in December.
Weekend activity showed Smith, Terry Kerr, Hatling, Jacobo, and Holt with two wins a piece, while Yee Owens, and
Ray Mendiola (190) split their two matches. |
