Frosh Matmen Open Season In Salinas

Coach Sam Della Maggiore's freshman wrestling team will officially open the 1941 wrestling season on January 31 in Salinas against the junior college there.

Although most of the team is inexperienced, Della Maggiore has the largest turn-out in the history of the sport and is confident of producing a strong team. The 1940 freshman team defeated Salinas last year in the Northern California freshman and junior college tournament at the Lettuce city.

Both varsity and freshman teams are holding nightly workouts in the small gym at 5:00. The varsity season will not open until the following week, Feb. 7, in Spartan Pavilion against the strong California Aggies team.

The second freshman match of the year will be held the same evening as a preliminary to the Cal Aggies meet. The Spartlets meet the highly-touted San Mateo JC squad.

Della Maggiore is planning elementary instructions the rest of the quarter, and beginners are urged to come out for one of the teams. Varsity reserves are tentatively scheduled to compete in the CCAA Winter Sports Carnival, while the varsity travels to Reno.

Another novice tournament for beginners is also planned for this quarter.
