Wrestling coach Gene Grattan wasn't apparently just popping off when he predicted a few days ago that his 1938
grapplers would be as strong as last year's crop--in fact last night's intersquad matches proved definitely that
Attorney Gene will have sterling contenders in all divisions as the boys roughed it up in preliminary scrimmage
preparatory to their first bout of the match Friday night.
Six settees were held in the gym yesterday and each gave the surprisingly large group of fans a genuine thrill.
The winners will perform Friday when the varsity men meet San Francisco YMCA and the frosh squad engages Modesto
Junior College.
The most outstanding match of the evening yesterday was the joust between Keith Hughes and Jack Fiebig, won by
the latter after a tough struggle. Another classic bout took place when Jack Smith scored a fall over Charley Smith.
Charley, decidedly an underdog, gave the more experienced Jack a good battle before having his shoulders pinned.
Fiebig and Hughes, both weighing 126 pounds, wrestled around for over seven minutes, but Fiebig eventually clasped
a half-nelson and crotch hold on Hughes to score a fall in 7:25. Fans gave both wrestlers a nice applause. In the
175 pound match between the two Smiths, Jack clamped a cross saddle and a double bar hold to win in 8:27. Up till
this time Charley was hold his own with the former LAJC star.
In the frosh bouts Masdeo pinned Cavello in 4:02, and Monk won over Quinn in nine minutes.
Other varsity results are as follows: Lindgren (145) defeated Horn in 5:36; Rush (165) won over Riddle in 5:56.
Della Maggiore and Jones didn't wrestle as the former is favoring a wrenched knee. |
