 Spartan Grapplers Pin Four Foes

Scoring four pins, the SJS wrestling squad coasted to a relatively easy 27-15 victory over Cal, Friday in the Spartan Gym.

The Bears were able to win only three of nine matches, and one of these was by default as Ron Matheson sprained his knee while wrestling Al Siegal in the 145-pound battle and had to retire early.

Spartan coach Hugh Mumby was impressed with the wins and singled out 152-pounder Gary Scardina and 167-pounder Mike Herschfelt, both of whom won by falls for especially outstanding efforts.

"Scardina is just getting back into his top form after a year's layoff from wrestling, and his performance Friday was his best this season," Mumby said.

"Herschfelt has improved with each meet and is coming on well," he added.

Lorne Miller, who moved up two wight divisions form his usual 145 and pinned his opponent at 160, also drew praise from Mumby, who indicated that Miller will probably wrestle at 152 or 160 in future matches.

Here are the complete results of Friday's meet:
