Wrestlers Prepare To Meet SF YMCA

Friday night is wrestling night at San Jose State College as coach Gene Grattan turns loose his herd of grapplers
against an invading troupe representing the San Francisco YMCA. Spartan Pavilion is the scene of the tussles.
For the past two weeks Grattan's men have been conditioning themselves nightly. Spartan followers believe this
year's squad will more than hold their own against coast competition. San Francisco's Y squad will determine largely
just how good Grattan's cohorts are.
Several of last year's championship team are again back and Grattan is putting much faith in them. Jack Smith,
Jack Fiebig, John Jones, Martin Olavarri, Melvin Rush, Sam Della Maggiore, Carleton Lindgren, Martin Sward, and
Joe Reginato are but a few grapplers who hope to prove their worth to San Jose partisans.
At present Grattan has a squad of 16, but he still welcomes any newcomers who desire a place on the varsity. Anyone
weighing 118 pounds is especially urged to show up as last year's entrant in that division, Henry Puckett, left
school and there is at present no one to take his place.
On the same program Friday evening, and as a preliminary to the varsity meet, the freshman wrestling squad engages
Modesto Junior College. Not much is known about the State yearlings, but observers claim they have a well-balanced
troupe and will make things mighty interesting for the visiting aggregation. Coach Abe Jessup of the Modestans
is bringing up a squad of seven men. |
