  Hello Team, SJSU Wrestling Supporters!

Well, the end of the road at SJSU has finally come for me. After heading up SJSU Wrestling for the past seven years I now pass the reins on to my worthy successor, Robb Redman (dawgcatcher@msn.com) Robb has been my assistant coach as well as heading up the SJSU womens team (where they ranked as high as 5th Nationally last year!) Robb has a sterling wrestling career as a wrestler as well as a coach and I feel confident he will surpass anything I've achieved while coaching the team at SJSU. Please continue to support the team as well as Robb as I move on to my next venture. I thank you all for everything you've done for me and SJSU over the past seven years. These years have been some of the best times I've ever had in the world of wrestling. The friends I have made over this time will continue with me for a lifetime. I greatly appreciate that!

Personally, this past year has been quite rewarding for me. We won our third straight NCWA Conference title after two seasons as runner up (I was fortunate to be named Coach of the Year/NCWA West for the fifth straight year). The SJSU wrestlers (and a contingent of Los Gatos HS wrestlers!) prepared me to win the Veterans US Nationals in both Freestyle and Greco and I placed 9th at this year's Veterans Freestyle World Championships. I am now an English teacher at Pajaro Valley High School in Watsonville while also completing my Masters degree in Education. In addition, Pajaro Valley has named me their head coach for the upcoming season. With all of these new responsibilities, this is the primary reason I'm stepping down at SJSU. One of the positive notes from this is that now SJSU will have at least one school as a feeder school to keep sending wrestlers to SJSU!

Again, I thank each and every one of you who have supported SJSU over the years and look forward to your continued support with Robb.

Cheers,
Jim Lucas

  Hello Team --

Alas, I missed last Monday's practice because I came down with a cold at the last minute (and didn't want any you to get it!) And tomorrow (Monday, May 7) I have to pass on practice because I'm working on a mondo lesson plan presentation that has me working today, tomorrow night and Tuesday night.

I will return to the Los Gatos wrestling room Monday, May 14. Please go ahead without me. Email me if you have any questions. Remember -- Mon & Wed at Los Gatos; Tues and Thurs at Andrew Hill. All pratcices are 7-8:30pm.

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  Hello Team!

We will continue to practice Monday and Wednesday evenings at Los Gatos High School and Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Andrew Hill High School, all practices are 7:00pm until 8:30pm.

I am starting my Masters program and will only be able to make Monday evening workouts for the next couple of months. Come late June/July I will be going all out (as I will be full-on training for the Vet World Championships in Auust in Istanbul!)

Please make as many practices as possible. This is how you improve! This is how you take your ability to the next level! If you want me to help you with a specific move or technique between now and July, be sure to make it to Los Gatos on Mondays. Our other coaches are equally viable in teaching you technique (Robb Redman, Jon Silver, Ron Hughes, Joe Inkerbrandt.)

Have fun, get good grades and make it to practice!

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  Hello Team!

Robb Redman did an OUTSTANDING job with the SJSU women at Nationals in Vegas last week. Here's an email he sent me noting results. A big round of kudos to Robb and the womens team!

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

Robb's email:
"Of Note. Three Spartan Women placed in Senior Nationals. Kelsey Campbell 5th 59kg qualified for World Team Trials, Natasha Phinney 6th 72kg qualified for World Team Trials and Samantha Phillips 8th 59kg.

Also The Spartan Wrestling club won the U.S. Sombo Women's National Title with three National Champions Jessica Ortiz 51kg Samantha Phillips 59kg and Marina Piccolotti 72kg. All three will represent the U.S. at Worlds in Turkey September 7th to 9th, 2007. Amantha Hordagoda was 2nd at 48kg and Cindy Pacheco was 3rd at 48kg and qualified as members of the U.S. National Sombo Team. I was asked to coach the Women's team in Turkey. Not bad for not knowing what Sombo was a week ago. -- Robb"

  April 10, 2007
  Hello Team!

Your Spartan Coaches lived up to the SJSU legacy at the Veterans US National Championships last week! Jon Silver won the folkstyle and Greco National Championship and nabbed a 2nd in freestyle; Rob Redmann took 2nd in Greco; Ron Hughes won Greco and was on the verge of winning freestyle when he was sidelined with a blood clot in his brain that rushed him off to the Las Vegas hospital for emergency surgery (prayers for him. Word has it he's doing well, but say a few words to whoever you believe in as added insurance for this great guy!) Yers truly won both Greco and freestyle pinning everybody I wrestled (my weight class had three 2006 National champs in it!) Ron Engel had to pass on competing at the last moment due to a detached retina. Some words to who you believe in ought to help him, too. (Side Note:
Ron's son, Nate, nabbed a 6th at the Seniors Greco Nationals qualifying him for the World Team Trials this summer.)

If there had been a team title for Veterans, Spartan Wrestling Club would have won! Thanks to all of you who worked with us to get us ready.

As to practices -- Mondays and Wednesdays at Los Gatos High School 7-8:30pm; Tuesdays and Thursdays at Andrew Hill HS 7-8:30pm. I am taking this week off (has absolutely NOTHING to do with a south swell hitting Santa Cruz!) I'll be back in the room a day or two a week starting next week as I start my Masters/Credential Program in another few weeks. I'll kick it into gear once we get into the midsummer timeframe getting set for the Worlds in Istanbul first week of August.

Right now, Team, continue to work out, learn technique and stay loose. Wrestle in the local freestyle meets as they will provide a good workout for you outside of the people in the room. This is the best way to learn new technique.

See you next week!

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  Hello Team!

Just so you know -- we are working out Monday and Wednesdays at Los Gatos High School - 7-8:30pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays at Andrew Hill High School - 7-8:30pm. This is a GREAT opportunity for you to work on technique, learn new moves and stay on the mat in a somewhat non-stressful manner.

I am hoping to see all of you out there! And since we are not on-campus, non-SJSU students can now workout with us any time.

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

P.S. I am getting ready for my National Championships in two weeks. As such, I have specific workout partners for this and will be working out at LGHS Mon-Thurs this week and next week. This doesn't mean you shouldn't be going to Andrew Hill on Tues & Thurs!

  March 12, 2007
  Hi Team!

Well, we gave it our all. Dan Calvo was one match away from All American, Matt Vavao was two matches away from All America honors. Alex, going against guys 30+ pounds heavier gave it his all. Russ, unfortunately, came down with some dreaded sickness the night before Nationals started and had to scratch. That was a tough break. In light of everything we've gone through this season (losing our on-campus workout facility), we can hold our heads high:

1. Conference Champions, 2nd year in a row.
2. Highest placing team at Nationals from the Western Conference
3. Out of 350+ teams across the nation, SJSU is in the Top 50!

Congrats to everyone on the team for what we achieved!

Freestyle and Greco Roman season starts tonight! We'll work out Monday and Wednesdays at Los Gatos High School, 7-8:30pm; Tuesdays and Thursdays at Andrew Hill High School, 7-8:30pm. This is a chance to improve your technique, stay in shape in a non-stressful environment. The more time you have on the mat, the better you get.

See you tonight!

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  Hello Team!

Practice tonight at Los Gatos High School - 7-8:30pm.

Critical to help our SJSU wrestlers going to Nationals to get them ready.

Cleared to participate at Nationals include: Dan Calva, Gregory Johnson, Alex Stergion and Matt Vavao. Your airfair and hotel rooms have been booked! Now start working like you've never worked before to get ready for Nationals! ALSO - Nationals are in Dallas -- 2 hours AHEAD of us! Start getting up 2 hours earlier than you normally do -- that 2 hours can mess with you when you get there if you haven't prepared.

Everyone else -- get to practice to help these guys and start getting yourself ready for the freestyle and Greco season coming up!

See you all tonight!

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  Hello All!

Next practice is Monday, Feb. 26 at Los Gatos HS - 7-8:30pm. Below is the press release on today's results. This was truly a TEAM effort! Without every single SJSU wrestler giving it their all, we wouldn't have accomplished this. NCWA West Champions! You'll have this for the rest of your lives! Congrats, team. I'm very proud of you!

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  Hello Team --

I hope to see all of you tonight. This is conference finals coming up. This is where you have the chance to prove something for yourself...and for your team.

Nolan, Joey, Junior, Alex, Manny -- where have you guys been? We need you. And that's putting it mildly!!!

If you have trouble getting a ride to practice - Call Hanno 510-520-8645 or Russ 408-821-1882 to coordinate rides.

Believe me, team -- you don't want to wake up when you're 40 or 50 years old saying to yourself "If only I had just worked a bit harder, I could have been an All American..." Something to think about.

Anywho -- looking forward to seeing all of you out there tonight. Again, if you haven't signed up for NCWA, info below (as well as directions to LGHSand to Andrew Hill tomorrow night.)

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

We'll be back on the mat next Monday at Los Gatos High School.

Work hard!

  Hello Team!

Practice tonight at Los Gatos High School. Be there! Looking forward to seeing all of you out there (and hopefully sans a bit of Holiday weight?!!!) Gonna be a good one tonight. And now we (San Jose State) are hosting the Western Conference Finals (Fresno Pacific can't do it.) Which means we need to find a school that will allow us to hold a mini tournament sometime Wednesday, Feb 21 or Thursday, Feb 22 for 2-3 hours. CCS is that Friday and Saturday and all of the refs are taken, thus the mid week finals for us.

As to getting to practice -- call Hanno to coordinate car pooling. If you have a car, stop by 4th & San Carlos at 6:30pm to help take some of your team mates to practice. If you don't have a car or need transportation, get over there (but call Hanno first --510-520-8645) to coordinate.

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  Hello Team!

We finally got all the kinks worked out as to practices. We have confirmed Los Gatos High School on Mondays and Wednesdays and Andrew Hill High School on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I realize this is an inconvenience, but we are WRESTLERS! We will always be given the short end of the stick -- as such, we need to think positively and rise up to the challenge!

Practice starts next Monday, January 22 -- practice times are 7:00 - 8:30pm. Just under five weeks to Conference Finals in Fresno. We have a good chance of repeating as Conference Champions -- IF -- and this is an "IF" -- you dedicate yourselves to working as hard as you possibly can between now and then. Two weeks after Conference is Nationals. You want to make the finals at Conference to be assured of qualifying for Nationals.

And we need many of you to sign up for NCWA. DO IT NOW!
