  November 17, 2006
  Hello Team!

This Saturday I need ALL OF YOU to be at Uchida Hall to help move mats. (Greg Johnson and Joe Ceccotti -- please bring warm ups and singlets to me then, too!)

We will be loading our mats onto a truck and taking them to Pescadero School for safe keeping. Anyone who wants to see the North Coast is more than welcome to come along for the ride. But definitely need you at Uchida Hall by 9:30.

As to practices -- well, my emails get far more circulation than I thought! Someone thought when we would be helping wrestlers at Los Gatos that would include the high school wrestlers during their folkstyle season -- El Wrong-O!!! Initially we will be helping little kids (4th, 5th graders). Then we'll help the middle schoolers when their season is done. Then the high schoolers when their season is done. OK? Thank you. (Helping high schoolers during their season unless it's a clinic is against the rules and would make their team ineligible. No way would I do that!)

As to where we will be practicing in the short term -- next Monday and Tuesday we garnered the room at Lincoln High School (just off Leigh and West San Carlos.) Very close to SJSU. We still haven't been given final OK at Los Gatos HS so Lincoln is a good alternative. And if all goes according to plan, that might be our new "home"! Russ and Hanno will be emailing you
specifics but in a nut shell, you'll get to Lincoln at 7pm Monday and Tuesday, run and warm up so that when their basketball team is done, we'll be set to go. Wear running shoes there as we'll be outside while doing our warm ups. Remember -- WE ARE GUESTS THERE! Treat it like fine china!!! Leave it cleaner than when you arrived!!!

I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING ALL OF YOU SATURDAY TO HELP MOVE THE MATS!

A special THANK YOU to Jim Doss who is providing the truck to help us move the mats to Pescadero. He's taking time out of his Saturday to help us with this. We all owe him a giant THANK YOU!!!!

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  Hello All --

0 for 7 last night. Could have won every match but conditioning played a big part in us making way too many mistakes. Hopefully this will be the real wake up call and everyone gets serious.

Which is what we have to do. Get serious. Make every practice. Work as hard as you possibly can at every practice. Run and lift weights during the day so that you're doing more than what we're doing in the room.

We are having an uphill battle on our hands across the board but we need to push ourselves that much harder. For those who haven't been to the room in awhile, we are getting kicked out of our room due to the lovely SJSU administration saying the mats are a hazard in the room (yet the hard, wooden shelves they put in the wrestling room aren't?) Welcome to the real world of wrestling -- we are lower than whale dung. But that should push us harder to do better to show the world and the SJSU administration we don't care what they think -- we are wrestlers.

It looks like we'll be working out at Los Gatos High School. Part of that arrangement means you guys will have to help coach their youngsters from 6-7pm. We can split it up as to who helps out, but we need to do this in return for use of the room (and you guys need to coach these kids following what their head coach says to do. No lolly gagging about!)

Also to do this we have to members of USA Wrestling so bring me $30 tonight (but no later than tomorrow, Thursday, Nov 16.) You need to do this because we will start working out at Los Gatos HS Nov 28. You need to coordinate among yourselves to carpool over to LGHS. Their workout facility is great (much better than ours.) This will make us considerably better. I guarantee it!

I look forward to seeing all of you in Uchida Hall tonight at 7:30pm. I look forward to seeing you all work harder than you've ever worked in your life. I look forward to being able to call you "wrestlers".

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  November 12, 2006
  Hello Team!

Well, SJSU isn't the only institution where wrestling gets the short end of the stick -- the Skyline dual has been moved up to Tuesday because volleyball decided to have a meet on Wednesday.

So that means we go to Skyline on Tuesday, Nov 14 -- NOT WEDNESDAY, NOV 15! Weigh ins at 6pm, wrestling starts at 7pm. Meet at Uchida Hall at 5pm to carpool to Skyline.

Same rules apply -- challenges Monday, must be within 3 pounds of wrestling weight -- 125, 133, 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, 184, 197, Hwt (max 285).

YOU MUST ALSO BE A MEMBER OF NCWA -- you must be a member of NCWA just to practice, so sign up NOW! Thus far we have the foillowing SJSU students as members: Joe Ceccotti, Hanno Murphy, Johnson Nguyen, Russ Lopez, Greg Johnson (Jr.), Alex Stergion and Matt Vavao. That's not enough to make up a dual match team, guys! SIGN UP NOW! www.ncwa.net - go to "join" click on "forms" register online -- school code sjs77, advisor David Serrano, coach Jim Lucas.

See you all tomorrow night in the practice room 7:30pm SHARP! I'll have my scale!

Coach Lucas

  November 9, 2006
  Hello Team!

Good practices this week. Keep it going tonight! Be there at 7:30pm and ready to GO!

No official practice this Saturday due to not having sufficient numbers, which means: EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU MUST RUN ON YOUR OWN -- or get your teammates together at a specified time and run together, pushing each other on. DO THIS!

DUAL WITH SKYLINE: This coming Wednesday, Nov 15 at Skyline. SCRATCH WEIGHT and WE WILL WEIGH IN AT SKYLINE AT 6PM! Skyline must have this in an official capacity meaning we must weigh in, we must wrestle official weights -- 125, 133, 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, 184, 197, HWT (max 285). As such we will have challenges Monday, Nov 13 at those weights where we have two or more wrestlers. YOU MUST BE WITHIN 3 POUNDS OF THE WEIGHT IN WHICH YOU CHALLENGE! For those of you having a bit more girth than what might be optimum, see above paragraph on running and multiply that by four. I realize you are SJSU students but just in case -- four in how many fingers you have minus your thumb (for most of you, at least!)

Coach Robb and others on the team with cars will meet at SJSU at 5pm to carpool to Skyline. I will meet you there as I will be coming directly from work in Pescadero (for those of you who don't know -- I've left the corporate world after 30 years and have become a teacher for La Honda-Pescadero School District teaching English and Writing.)

See you at practice tonight, team. GO SPARTANS!!!

Coach Lucas

  November 8, 2006
  Hello Team!

Monday and Tuesday practices were very good. We're back on track and PUSHING! In just two days I've seen a marked improvement...and we haven't even scratched the surface yet as to where we are headed!

Coach Robb will be running practice tonight and I'll be heading practice Thursday. Again, we are pushing.

All wrestlers in the room MUST SIGN UP FOR NCWA! Just to be in the room you must be a member. Get your credit card ($20) and go to www.ncwa.net -- click on "join" on the left hand side of the home page. Then click on "forms" and fill out the online registration -- school code is sjs77 (lower case all one word), advisor is David Serrano, coach is Jim Lucas. DO IT TODAY!

Getting back to practice, last night I asked who would be at Saturday practice. Two guys raised their hands and they were 70 pounds apart (so wrestling each other isn't feasible.) I do not want to drive all the way over the hill from Santa Cruz and not have anybody show up for practice (that would make Coach a very unhappy camper, if you get my drift.)

So here's the scenario -- email me, call me or let me know at practice tomorrow night if you will be at practice Saturday (10am - Noon.) I will make a decision Thursday as to whether we will practice Saturday or not. This is in your hands -- if you want that National Championship, if you want to be the best that you can be -- you determine what you need to get there.
As I mentioned last night, I'm just the conduit. This is YOUR team. You are on the mat. You determine how successful you want to be. You determine how you can realistically achieve your goals.

Have a GREAT practice tonight with Coach Robb. And I look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow night!

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

Congrats to Joe Ceccotti, Greg Johnson (Junior), Alex Stergion and Mat Vavao for hard work. Congrats also to Jennie and Kim for keeping stats! Much appreciated!

  October 30, 2006
  Hello Team --

We are going through a bit of a crisis right now trying to keep our wrestling program. We may lose our workout facility (YUH 202) which would shut us down. I am working with the department to save this. I will keep you posted.

Please come to practice tonight and I will fill you in on where we stand.

The Menlo tournament participation is in jeopardy due to us not having a team. There may be things we would have to do, as a team, to see if we can save our program. Again, I will elaborate tonight.

See you there!

Coach Lucas

  Hello Team!

Hope to see you at practice tonight.

I am cancelling this Saturday's practice because there is a clinic that I
think you'll get a tremendous amount of technique from. Plus you'll have a
chance to roll around with someone other than those of us in the SJSU
wrestling room. It is this Saturday at Pacific Grove High School, cost is
$10. Be out in front of Uchida Hall at 7am SATURDAY! Coach Robb will pick
you up (those who will be driving their own cars can follow Coach Robb to
Pacific Grove HS.) Here's the line up of clinicians:

Dremiel Byers - World Greco Champ & 5X National Champion
Chris Campbell - World Freestyle Champ & 2X NCAA Champion
Kerry McCoy - Stanford Head Coach, World Silver Medalist, 2X NCAA Champ, 2X
Olympian

GET YOUR $10 and DO THIS!!!!

ALSO -- Menlo tournament is a week from this Saturday. To compete in this you have to be signed up for NCWA. www.ncwa.net -- then click on "join" on lefthand side of page and go to "forms". You click on the top two forms of that page. San Jose State school code is sjs77 -- this is case sensative so make sure sjs is lowercase, no spaces between sjs and 77! You'll need a debit or credit card -- NCWA dues are $20.

SIGN UP FOR NCWA NOW!!! I can't take you to competition if you don't sign up! And you need to do this BEFORE NEXT WEDNESDAY! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

We will also have a dual match against Skyline Wednesday, Nov 15. We need to be at Skyline by 5pm. I will meet you there. Car pool over. Schedule your classes accordingly, let your teachers know that you will be a dual match and will need to make up any classwork. Let themn know NOW and plan for it! If you want to compete, I need to know ASAP so we can make sure we field a team. Again, you have to be a member of NCWA to do this, so sign up NOW!

See you at practice tonight.

  October 21, 2006
I now have to sign one more piece of paperwork to be cleared to run practice. I can't get the form until Monday so no practice Saturday. We WILL HAVE PRACTICE MONDAY! See you then.

Coach Lucas

  October 18, 2006
We have a small cadre of devoted wrestlers coming into the room every night. These are the wrestlers I will be taking to the Menlo tournament. To you others -- I've harped on you, sent emails, etc. and there still doesn't seem to be any response to get you in the room on a regular basis. (Those of you who have emailed me and/or called me, this isn't directed at you.) So the people who make the effort to be in the room will get to go to tournaments. This includes conference finals. I really don't care if someone who doesn't attend practice can beat someone who can or has been on the team for a few years...the person in the practice room will represent SJSU. Period.

Your decision. I'll see those who want to compete in the practice room.

ALSO -- JOIN NCWA! You have to process this by next week to make sure all goes through so you will be able to compete at the Menlo tournament.

Coach Lucas

  October 16, 2006

This is a needed practice so you get acclimated to wrestling in the morning as well as the evening. See you there!

ALSO --

To compete you must be athlete members of the NCWA. It cost $20 so have a debit card or credit card when you fill out the various forms. Go to www.ncwa.net. Then on the left side of the home page click on "Join" and then click on "Forms". You fill out the top two forms for "Wrestler". I get emailed when your form is cleared so please get on this right away. You need to have this done to compete. Directions are below -- our school code is sjs77 -- this is case sensitive (lower case).

WE'RE BACK IN THE WRESTLING ROOM STARTING THIS MONDAY, OCT. 16!

We have proof of insurance, it has been forwarded to Event Center/Club Sports personnel, so we're set to start it up!!!

Get your motors runnin'...we're gonna be on a tear!

See you all Monday, Oct. 16 at 7:30pm in the wrestling room, Uchida Hall, room 202.

Cheers,
Coach Lucas

  October 11, 2006
  Hello Team --

Well, our friends at the Event Center/Club Sports have stated that we cannot have wrestling workouts because our insurance paperwork hasn't been received by them yet (I'm working with NCWA to see why this hasn't occured.)

So what I want each and every one of you to do in the meantime -- gather in front of Uchida Hall at 7:30pm Monday through Thursday (starting TONIGHT) and you will run distance as a team. Then you will do windsprints as a team. You will get at least an hour to an hour and a half of running/conditioning in, so plan accordingly.

We can't let this paperwork snafu stop our workout/conditioning regimen. Russ and Hanno will be your team leaders running this. I'm hoping to have this fixed within a couple of days.

We are wrestlers...WE WILL NOT LET THIS PAPERWORK SNAFU DETER US IN OUR QUEST FOR CHAMPIONSHIP!

In wrestling,
Coach Lucas

  September 19, 2006
We will be practicing every Monday through Thursday, 7:30-9:00pm from now until further notice. We will start Saturday morning 10am - Noon practices Oct 21 so mark your calendars, arrange time with your jobs, etc.

Start running if you haven't yet. This week is ramp up week -- meaning practices will be intense. If you are lifting weights, running or any other type of cardio, do it in sufficient time to regain composure by 7:30pm -- because no one will be given exceptions to working hard. Menlo tournament is a short six-and-a-half weeks away!

See you at practice!

Coach Lucas

  September 11, 2006
  Hello Team!

Practice every day this week -- Monday through Friday, 7:30 - 9:00pm. As has been mentioned before, only SJSU students and approved coaches are allowed in the SJSU wrestling room now. We are working on an alternative site for high schoolers, so email me if you are in high school.

We will practice this Friday will a special guest -- my brother Cy. Cy was in two Olympic Trials (1968, 1972), he was the 1972 Western Olympic Trials Champion, was undefeated in dual match competition while at San Jose State, made it to the quarter finals at the NCAA National Championships before he lost a close match then was eliminated when that wrestler lost to the
eventual champion (no wrestle-backs in those days!) He was a Jr College 2x All American and California Jr College State Champion. He will be a guest clinician and you will all learn something from this session.

SJSU Mens Wrestlers, mark your calendars:

Sat., Nov 4 -- Menlo Open
Sat., Jan 7 -- Menlo Invitational
Sat., Feb 24 -- NCWA Western Conference Championships
Thurs.-Saturday, March 8-10 -- NCWA National Championships (we will leave Wednesday, March 7 and return Sunday, March 11.)

We will also have dual matches against UCLA and Fresno Pacific confirmed. We are also trying to get duals against West Valley, Stanford, UC Davis and possibly some NAIA teams coming to the Menlo Invitational.

What this means -- you need to be close to SJSU during semester break as our competition will be heavy during that time.

See you tonight!

Cheers,
Coach Lucas
