Coach Bill Smith

With Coach Mumby preparing for a sabbatical leave in 1970, SJS was in the market for a head coach. It found him in Bill Smith and quite possibly, without his influence, wrestling would have died at SJS. His influence can readily be understood from his background...while a student at Iowa Teacher's College, Smith won the NCAAs at 165-pounds in 1949 and 1950 and won the AAUs in 1949, 1950, and 1951.Then he won the Gold Medal as welterwight at the Helsinki Olympic Games in 1952. In 1957, he was elected to the Wrestling Hall of Fame and selected as Coach-of-the-Year. He served SJS in 1970.
